What is minimally invasive surgery (MIS)?
MIS, otherwise known as minimally invasive surgery, is a surgical technique that is becoming more frequently used among foot and ankle surgeons. This technique uses small incisions to provide surgical correction for a number of lower extremity pathologies. With this approach, there is less soft tissue disruption, less swelling, less need for immobilization, faster recovery times and overall limited use of post operative pain medications.
MIS can be used to treat an assortment of conditions including but not limited to: Bunions, hammer toes, fractures, reconstructive surgery, Achilles pathology, arthritides, metatarsalgia, and various foot and limb deformities.
Some of the most common remarks received from patients is a concern over immobilization, prolonged pain, lengthy recovery and unfortunately, an overall negative surgical experience.
